Al and Andy Wallace's Transcontinental Bicycle Ride

The Day starts slow were not out of camp until almost 10 AM.  I think were procrastinating because it starts uphill for the first hour or so.   The profile map showed us going downhill most of the day but for Andy every uphill was a killer.  So when we add up the uphill portion he climbs almost 2000 feet.  It is bike riding boot camp and on the job training.  At Lucia, we stop for food, water and a snack. Andy is afraid he can’t make the grade and is hoping we can find a camp ground.  Sadly I have to push, there literally is no where to stay, we must keep going.  Water is $3.75 for a liter and half.  If that is too much you can always keep going to camp at Kirk Creek campground to the next hiker/ biker camp ground where there was no potable water.

The heat is strong, and for this time of year it really is a blessing.  I had expected cold weather and maybe even rain.  I had vainly hoped to go all the way to San Simeon today but what was I thinking!   The 28 miles is still Andy’s longest bike ride ever!  We reach Kirk Creek about 4:30 PM, set up camp, store the bikes and gear, lock up, eat dinner, and only then allow ourselves to crash.  Andy reads, I catch an awesome sunset and the stars sparkle and twinkle like a nursery rhyme.   We are in bed early and plan to be up early as we have a 42 mile ride tomorrow and two major peaks to climb.  Andy is concerned!
